The seven-time world champion has achieved his second SPOTY award after a dominant display in Formula One this season.

Arguably F1's greatest ever talent, Lewis Hamilton equalled F1 legend, Michael Schumacher's record of seven world titles in 2020 after winning four F1 championships in a row.

The 35-year-old's impeccable form also re-wrote the history books after surpassing Schumacher's 91 grand prix victories.

Following a public vote, Hamilton defeated Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and jockey Hollie Doyle, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Two-time Heavyweight boxing Champion Tyson Fury, snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan and England cricketer Stuart Broad were all also shortlisted for the award.

Hamilton was delighted to have been awarded the trophy especially during such a tough year for all:

"I want to say congratulations to all the incredible nominees," said Hamilton. "I'm so proud of what they have achieved, and I want to say thank you to everyone that has voted for me.

"I wasn't expecting this knowing there's so many great contenders. Your heart's always pumping when they're announcing because you have absolutely no idea who was called in. But I am so grateful to the British public. This definitely goes a long way to giving me the best Christmas that I can have given the circumstances."

"I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone - it's been such an unusual year and I want to mention all the front-line workers and all the children round the world, I want you to try and stay positive through this difficult time, I'm sending you all positivity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

This is the second time Hamilton has won the award after previously being successful in 2014. He has also been runner up four times out of his eight nominations.

Following his achievement, Hamilton paid tribute to Sir Captain Tom Moore who was also honoured with the Helen Rollason award after raising just shy of £33 Million by completing laps of his garden during the first UK Coronavirus lockdown.

"There's so many great stories out there," said Hamilton.

Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford was also given the expert panel of the year award after challenging the government and convincing then to overturn their decision to end free school meals.

This resulted in 1.3 million children in England being able to claim free school meals and his campaigning led to a government pledge of more than £400 Million in support for poor children.
