Retired Peebles businessman Bob Jamieson is launching an ambitious attempt to cancel a planned wildlife haven in order to establish an F1 track on the East Lothian coast.

The planned proposal designed by 'The Sunbeam Trust', will feature an ice rink, gym and speedway venue alongside the track.

The circuit resembles current F1 circuit Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, which has hosted the opening race in the F1 calendar since 1996.

Scotland have trailed behind many countries when it comes to racing development. The most advanced circuit in Scotland is the Knockhill racing circuit which is designed for Formula 4 type racers, rally cars, and karting.

Therefore, the plans in Musselburgh could reignite the sport in Scotland.

The lagoon located in Musselburgh was reclaimed and transferred to East Lothian Council who planned to create a habitat for wildlife. However, Mr. Jamieson has stated that the proposals for a wildlife haven are a "wasted opportunity" and is urging the council to reconsider.

"The opportunity to generate income from millions of visitors to support local businesses and the local economy will be lost.

"I have been in touch again with [Councillor] Willie Innes and I await his response."

In response to Jamieson's plans, East Lothian Council stated: "Any formal planning application submitted to the council for consideration would, of course, be subject to the usual procedures with members of the public having the opportunity to comment.

The planned proposal has been criticised by members of the local public and several councillors alike.

Councillor Andy Forrest jokingly stated: "Next year's F1 calendar: Monza, Monaco, Musselburgh. Thought I had slept through the first three months of 2021 when I saw this, has to be an early April Fool."

An online campaign has also been set up to protest the plans, and it has already generated 4,000 signatures since its launch.

Members of the local public have also took to social media to voice their support and concern:

"Massive F1 fan but this would be a travesty."

"Great news hope it goes ahead. Think of the money and jobs that it would bring."

"Excellent idea. Scotland is crying out for a decent race track."

Currently Scottish F1 fans are unable to attend a home race with the nearest race being based at Silverstone.
